Papaver
Papaver
In case you are confused with the name, it is the latin word for Poppy flowers. These cup shaped flowers come in a variety of colors with wide open faces.
They can get notoriously invasive , but I love how pretty they look in fields standing tall and swaying their limp necks against the breeze.
Poppy flowers are an enduring symbol of Remembrance of the First World War, so poignantly expressed by Lt.Colonel John McCrae in his poem ‘In Flanders Fields’
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
What catches my attention though are remnants of the flower left behind in seed pods. The intricacy of this element of the aftermath of the floral decay, reminds us to appreciate beauty in the old.
