Mayura (Peacock)
Mayura (Peacock)
Pronounced Muh-yoo-ra, this is the traditional Sanskrit word used to describe the peafowl or peacock, in the South Asian region. These pretty birds are much sought after all over the world for their plumage. It is the National bird of India and as such has earned a fabled place in Indian temple art, mythology, poems, folk music and traditions.
Growing up, the only opportunity to see peacocks were in the zoo. But, when i attended University in New Delhi, our beautiful campus atop a hill had wooded areas and we would hear peacocks call out from time to time.
