Helios
Helios
Sunflowers, the true followers of the sun, face eastwards at dawn and romance the sun following it’s path through the day, until it sets in the west. It’s called Heliotropism.
But, they do this until they are old and them stop following the sun. Instead keep facing east waiting for insects to visit and spread their pollen to make new flowers.
William Blake, the poet, pens it so well
‘Ah! sunflower, weary of time,
Who countest the steps of the sun,
Seeking after that sweet golden clime
Where the traveller’s journey is done’.
There is something so captivating about shapes and outlines of a plant as it rots. In Sunflowers, the bright yellow head full of seeds becomes more pronounced as it matures- it is as if there is a timelessness and formlessness of nature.
As pretty as the flower was in full bloom with it’s distinctive yellow flame-like petals, they are equally beautiful with petals dulling in color, shriveling and the seed head displaying the Golden Ratio we learn about in Math.
