Pursuing your Passion with Confidence

Have you ever wondered what it is like to be passionate about something and not being able to follow through on that dream? There are many in this situation, so you are not alone. Up until recently, I was in that same position too. I am a still a work in progress and learning but, decided a few years’ ago that I did not want to work in the corporate industry any longer, and instead, wanted to focus on pursuing Art.

Growing up I always doodled, painted, drew but, never thought that I could have a career as an artist. The common opinion was that this was not a traditional job that could help earn money and hence, I wasn’t encouraged to go down that road. I didn’t have the vision or courage to follow an Art career and those around me didn’t know any better. So, after high school, I went on to study Sociology at the Graduate and Masters level and quite enjoyed it. Thereafter, getting my Business Management degree with a focus on Human Resources, led me to work in the Corporate industry for several years’. But, through it all I felt something missing but couldn’t quite figure out what it was until I quit my job in the US and our family moved back to India. This break gave me the space to get back to Art. I decided this was going to be my second act.

Since I had no formal education in Fine art, pursuing this as a career didn’t seem possible at the time. So, I started small with whatever I knew -sketching, watercolor paintings etc, just so I could get the muscle memory back. But, I kept at it consistently trying various things in an attempt to become more skilled and confident in the medium I wanted to paint in. I hesitated to call myself an artist, going through imposter syndrome at every moment, thinking that not having an Art degree didn’t give me the right to do so.

Along the way, I gathered some useful tips that have worked for me in this journey as an artist. Some of these are not just applicable to Fine Artists’ but, if you have a passion in any field like writing, cooking, sports to name a few.
