Art And Storytelling

Every artist has a story to tell through their art. It comes naturally to artists. An idea for a story forms either from memory or from experience or even in the exploration of forms or patterns. Sometimes the artist could explore the same subject again and again to form a visual story or a sort of a narrative or a collection.

An artist’s ability to tell a story through various mediums be it paints, installations, poetry, performing arts, etc can be unique. It is unique to their specific experiences or what it is at that point of time that they want to explore. Storytelling takes many forms and through stories woven into their chosen form of art, artists connect with their audience or viewer.

Is storytelling then essential to artists? It absolutely is. Through visual storytelling - artists create narratives that help us connect with each other and create a community. It is a method of recording experiences that passes onto future generations.

For me, art is a medium through which I record my experiences and make connections. Most of what i paint come from places I have been to or a place a friend has been to and there is a story to tell. I am essentially creating a visual diary for my audience. My connections come from the places i have lived in or have visited and hence the familiarity in telling a story. It could be the Winter landscapes collection or the 31 day painting project last year... each of my paintings has a connection and story behind it.  It is a journey I love.
